Kinja'd!!!

My wife was initially not thrilled that I bought another old Toyota. I don’t quite blame her. I made all kinds of fantastic (inevitable) lies. “Oh, it’ll be a backup car / a safe car / a practical commuter / something more modern,” etc. And let me tell you all, I tried. Oh my God did I try to shop for like a Matrix or even a Legend Coupe, and especially an SC400.

Aaaaand then Celica.

Feeling antsy to drive it again, I told her we should take it to our appointment tonight. She mumbled something coldly. She was expecting another rough riding Hilux or perhaps a loud and dirty Tercel. Another 30-something old barely running project car, she must be thinking to herself.

I don’t want my wife to lament getting in my car, for what would be the fifth car with such a reaction.

On the way there I start talking about the car. She is staring out the window, “Mmhmm, uh huh, yeah.” I am persistent. On the way back, I start getting her to chime in.

“This... is probably the nicest car you’ve owned.” [backhanded compliment lol]

“It is comfy though.”

“It’s actually really quiet in here.”

Then going up the last hill towards home, I gun it.

“Wow! It’s really smooth too!”

Oh yes. I am really smooth.

But let’s face the facts: you probably aren’t James Bond in a 2000GT (Unless you are in which case I won’t give away your identity).

Good work on your part. Also makes me feel really lucky. My wife has repeatedly mentioned she misses riding in my Z (two-seater, so we can only both go if we get a sitter), and even my truck (‘89 Toyota, so not really a HiLux, but sorta the same deal).

Japanese cars make everything ridiculously smooth. My dad’s terribly beat up Taco which I learned stick on was still much more smoother than an E30 i6. E30 sounded like a truck, the toyota engine purred

Odd because my Driver’s Ed Camry 4-cyl rattled more than a barrel of hamsters in a popcorn machine at idle, which showed a relatively normal ~750 rpm on a car with 265K miles. Must have just been an exception.

To be honest, the 1zz powered Corolla I had for drivers’ ed felt sketchy as fuck with what i suspected a power steering pump that was super leaky. My dad maintained it until it died. I don’t think drivers’ ed vehicles are even maintained past oil and tire changes.

Even my V6 3.slow is incredibly smooth. They did something right.

It's the opposite from my expirience. Every Crapola I've ever driven has felt like a bag of nails was released in the engine.

Wives...they're so cute when they believe the nonsense we spout as justification for another car.
